Battlemap Forge (MZ/MV) | Playable & TTRPG Inspired
A downloadable battlemap-forge
Battlemap Forge rolls tactical encounter maps for RPG Maker MZ and MV the way a GM sketches one on the table: a seed, a site, a few dials, and a map you can argue over. Every map comes out with proper autotiles, wall faces and shadows, tactical region IDs and placeholder events, so it opens in the editor as a real map instead of a picture.
It runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded; nothing needs an account.
What it forges
- Seven sites: Dungeon (rooms, corridors, doors, torches), Cavern (cellular caves, pools, stalagmites), Wilds (forest road, river ford, ambush cover), Hamlet (cottages, lanes, a well square), Battlefield (craters, palisade, trench, banners), Ruins (broken halls, overgrowth, flooding) and Temple (symmetric nave, chapels, altar).
- Seeded and repeatable: the same seed and dials give the same map, so a name like
black-vault-of-vharekis all you need to write down. - Tactical regions on RPG Maker's region layer: 1 party deployment, 2 enemy deployment, 3 objective, 4 difficult terrain, 5 hazard, 6 cover, 7 chokepoint. Read them in-engine with
$gameMap.regionId(x, y)or your favourite region plugin. - A Chronicle for each map: a generated name, a read-aloud paragraph that describes what was actually generated (the flooded hall, the nine chambers, the three chests), an encounter table by tier and party size, plot hooks, treasure and terrain hazards.
- A Tactics readout: open tiles, percentage with cover, difficult ground, chokepoint list with coordinates, distance from deployment to the enemy and to the objective, in 5 ft squares, inches or metres.
- Hand editing: terrain brush, prop stamps, eraser, spawn/enemy/objective markers, 40-step undo. Walls, shadows, regions and tactics recompute after every stroke.
- A local library of saved maps with thumbnails, hand edits included.
- Table lighting: day, dusk, night or torchlit preview, with a scale bar and north mark on the PNG export.
What you get in the editor
MapXXX.jsonwith all six layers: ground autotiles (A1 water, A2 floors, A3 roofs, A4 walls with correct 47-shape and wall-face indices), props on layers 2–3, auto-shadows beside walls on layer 4, region IDs on layer 5.- Events already placed:
PartySpawn, numberedEnemyevents wired to Battle Processing with a self-switch, treasureChestevents (gold + self-switch open state), animatedDoorevents, anAltarobjective and a farExit. - A
MapInfos.jsonentry to copy in, and the install steps right in the tool. - Optional: load your own tileset PNGs to preview the real art and click-pick which autotile kind stands for each terrain. Bindings ship aimed at the stock Dungeon and Outside tilesets and are fully editable.
How to use it
- Pick a site and roll a seed (or type one). Adjust the dials; the map re-forges live.
- Paint fixes on the Edit tab if the roll is almost right.
- On Export, set MZ or MV, the Map ID and Tileset ID, then Download Map JSON (or Copy JSON).
- Save the file as
data/MapXXX.jsonwith the editor closed, add the MapInfos entry, reopen the project.
Current development status
This is a development build. It generates, edits, saves and exports, but expect rough edges:
- Default prop tiles (trees, pillars, crates…) are best-effort guesses at the stock sheets; use Bindings → load sheet → Pick to correct them for your tileset.
- Wall faces are one tile tall; two-tile walls, cliffs with ramps and A5 floors are on the list.
- Encounter tables use generic fantasy foes and are meant as prompts, not stat blocks.
- No multi-map linking yet (each map's
Exitevent is a placeholder Transfer).
Planned: 2-tall walls and cliffs, a "dungeon chain" mode that links exits across maps, tileset presets for popular community sheets, export of the Chronicle as a GM sheet, and a plugin that reads the region layer for grid-combat rules.
Feedback, bug reports and seeds that produced something great are all welcome in the comments.
